| Some stones evoke forests, deserts or the earth, while Larimar feels like a small piece of the ocean kept close. Its soft blue tones, cloud-like white patterns and naturally flowing lines bring a fresh, quiet and distinctive character to everyday jewellery and collected pieces. Larimar is a natural blue to blue-green variety of Pectolite, a mineral belonging to the inosilicate group. It is primarily found in the Dominican Republic in the Caribbean. Its blue colour is associated with copper, and its appearance can range from white and pale blue to sky blue, blue-green and deeper blue, often marked by cloud-like, wave-like or marble-like patterns. Larimar was noticed locally in the early twentieth century, while modern commercial mining began in the 1970s. It is mainly sourced from the area around Barahona in the Dominican Republic, which is why it is also known as Caribbean Blue Stone. The name Larimar was created by discoverer Miguel Méndez, combining his daughter’s name Larissa with “mar”, the Spanish word for sea. One of Larimar’s most distinctive features is the combination of blue colour and naturally formed white patterns that resemble the movement of the sea. Some pieces show a soft, pale blue appearance, while others display deeper blue, blue-green tones or stronger white cloud-like markings. The colour balance, pattern distribution and direction vary naturally from piece to piece. Larimar is commonly associated with calm, relaxation, emotional balance, communication, gentle strength and inner clarity. It is often chosen by those who want to slow down, create space for their feelings, or bring a sense of openness and ease into everyday life. |

① What makes Larimar distinctive? Larimar is best known for its blue to blue-green body colour combined with naturally formed white cloud-like, wave-like or flowing patterns. These markings create an appearance reminiscent of the sea, ocean waves and open skies. Some higher-quality pieces show stronger blue colour, delicate white patterns and balanced colour distribution. ② Who is Larimar suitable for? Larimar is suitable for those drawn to ocean-inspired colours, natural patterns and understated individuality. It is often chosen as a symbol of calm, relaxation, emotional reflection and gentle expression. It can also appeal to anyone moving through a period of change, seeking a more balanced rhythm or looking for refreshing blue-toned jewellery and collected pieces. ③ How should I choose Larimar? Start by looking at the intensity of the blue, the distribution of the white patterns and the overall composition of the stone. For a soft and airy appearance, look for pale blue tones with delicate white markings. For a stronger mineral character, consider deeper blue or blue-green pieces with more pronounced contrast. When choosing jewellery, also pay attention to the polish, thickness, natural fractures and suitability for everyday wear. ④ Why does Larimar have different colours and patterns? Larimar’s colour is mainly associated with copper within the mineral and the conditions under which it formed. Variations in blue, blue-green, white and tonal depth are influenced by mineral composition, growth processes and associated materials. Its natural patterns develop through mineral growth and aggregation, creating different colour distributions and unique ocean-like markings in each piece. |
